An inmate was dismembered and covered in blood in an attack on Rikers Island, while violence continues to plague the notorious prison complex, The Post has learned.
The inmate, who is in his 30s and is a member of the Bloods gang, was allegedly assaulted by two rival gang members, Raheem Patterson and Khallid Garris, at the George R. Vierno Center Thursday afternoon, internal records show.
When a correctional officer intervened and used pepper spray to quell the riot, Garris, who is being held on homicide charges, ran to his cell, where officers found a large pocket knife hidden in a peanut butter jar, the records say.
A machete was recently found at Otis Bantum Correctional Center, and prison sources say such weapons are “unknown in prison.”
“Everyone seems to be getting braver. The cut was made with a real knife. This is unheard of in prisons,” the veteran source said, referring to the makeshift weapons typically used to perpetrate violence in prison.
“I’ve never seen anything like this in my career. We don’t know how these get into the building…someone will be killed.”
A picture showing three inmates grinning in a cell at OBCC shows one of them clutching the machete, but the inmate with the gun was released in January, sources said.
“There’s no telling how long it’s been in the building,” the source said.
Last week, more than 50 scalpel blades wrapped in black electrical tape were found behind a toilet in the male visitor’s bathroom, records show.
When Mayor Eric Adams took office and appointed Commissioner Louis Molina to head the Justice Department, he promised to bring security and order back to Rikers Island, but prison sources say chaos and violence are still rife.
For months, the prison has been mired in a crisis that has put inmates without critical services, such as medical care, inmates and staff alike at risk.
The DOC did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
