Caney’s new adoptive mother Michelle Hebert Young was arrested and charged after her 6-month-old suffered a skull fracture

NEW CANEY, Texas (KTRK) – A New Caney adoptive mother was arrested and charged with grievous bodily harm to a child after police said a 6-month-old baby boy was found unresponsive to skull fracture at grandma’s house.

Police officer Roman Forrest said Michelle Hebert Young has been raising the baby since he was born, along with her 2-year-old brother.

Sheriff Stephen Carlisle said Young called 911 to her home on January 26.

The baby was taken to Children Memorial Hermann Hospital, where doctors said he had retinal hemorrhages in both eyes and bleeding in the brain, injuries similar to a traumatic head injury.

“They can provide a lot of evidence that is consistent with infantile tremor syndrome,” says Carlisle.

Court records show the baby underwent an MRI examination to determine the extent of the injury.

“They are severe enough that they can lead to permanent damage,” says Carlisle.

The sheriff said Young came up with a number of different stories blaming the baby’s 2-year-old brother for the injuries.

She initially told 911 dispatchers that her brother had thrown a softball at the baby. She then told police that he had thrown a phone at the baby. She then changed her story again to say that the baby hit his head on the dresser.

“There are so many stories,” Carlisle said.

Doctors at the Hermann Children’s Memorial Institute who treated the baby documented the injuries and reported abuse.

Carlisle said the baby was treated and discharged and returned to Child Protective Services. He believes the baby will be placed in another foster home.

The baby’s brother was also removed from Young’s home.

Police said her husband, who was playing poker at the time, was not under investigation.

Young is in the Montgomery County Jail on a $100,000 deposit.

A local spokesman for the Department of Family Protective Services on Thursday said they were unable to answer questions regarding the care of the brothers.
