OTTAWA (Reuters) – Canada will join its allies in boycotting the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing to send China a message about its human rights record, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Wednesday.
Australia and Britain will join a diplomatic boycott, their prime ministers said on Wednesday, as other allies weigh similar moves to protest China’s human rights record..
President Joe Biden’s administration has cited what the United States calls genocide against minority Muslims in China’s Xinjiang region. China denies any human rights abuses.
“Many partners around the world are deeply concerned by the Chinese government’s repeated human rights violations. That is why we are announcing today that we will not be sending any diplomatic representatives to the Beijing Olympics,” Trudeau told reporters.
