Cammack Christian School travels with the Mardi Gras, stopping at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Ray Cammack Shows, which hosts the carnival at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, has hundreds of employees who travel with the company for most of the year.

The result of all this travel meant that many children went weeks without seeing their parents, but that changed when Cammack Christian Academy was founded in 2015.

“Cammack Christian Academy is the traveling school for Ray Cammack shows,” said teacher Kate Bishop. “We look after the children whose parents travel full-time.”

The school consists of pre-school through eighth graders in an air-conditioned trailer just off the center. It’s a fully accredited school that’s packing up and relocating as the Mardi Gras parades through Texas, Arizona and California from February through November.

“The school was founded out of the need to keep our families together,” Bishop said. “They just couldn’t spend much time with their family.”

The students are the children of the carnival board members and managers who work full-time with the carnival.

What happens when you ask a fourth grader what it’s like going to school at a carnival?

“It’s fun,” said fourth grader Walker Miller.

While they’re just steps away from the fun rides and delicious food, that comes after their schoolwork is done.

“Our kids don’t go out and eat funnel cakes and corn dogs every day,” Bishop said. “But do they like rides. Yes, they are children.”
