California Rep. Devin Williams Jr. is accused of killing a couple

A California sheriff’s deputy was arrested after he allegedly used his service gun to kill a couple at their home early Wednesday morning, authorities said.

Devin Williams Jr., 24, was taken into custody less than 12 hours after a frantic search for him for the double murder of a 58-year-old man and his 42-year-old wife, police said.

Williams, a member of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Department, was off duty at the time of the Dublin shooting around 1 a.m. but allegedly used his service handgun to carry out the violence, authorities said.

“He knew her – this wasn’t an accidental crime,” said Lt. Alameda County Sheriff Ray Kelly, according to Mercury News. “It was a very bizarre chain of events that unfolded.”

“This is a tragedy,” he added. “We’re all in shock here.”

The newspaper reported a law enforcement source said the unidentified couple were killed “execution style.”

Williams was arrested after calling and speaking to Dublin Police Chief Garrett Holmes, who believed the suspect faced a mental health crisis during the 45-minute phone call.

The suspect fled after the shooting before surrendering on Wednesday.

The California Highway Patrol picked him up about 160 miles from the scene of the crime in the rural Central Valley.

“It is a great loss to our community and even more disheartening to find out that it was one of us who was the instigator behind this tragic incident,” said Holmes, who also works for the Alameda Sheriff’s Office.

Gunshots rang out shortly after a caller told dispatchers that an intruder with a gun had entered the home in Northern California, police said. According to authorities, the couple’s adolescent son was at home at the time of the shooting, as well as a visiting male relative.

Police were still searching for the gun used after Williams allegedly threw it out of his car window while trying to flee, authorities said.

Wednesday marked the one-year anniversary that Williams was in the department. He was assigned to the Oakland Courthouse and there were no problems with his job performance during his short tenure.

But Kelly of the Alameda Sheriff’s Office hinted at events in his personal life over the past few months that may have led to the violent outburst.

“Many of these events went undetected and undisclosed and we will investigate that. There are many questions that need to be answered,” he said.
