California Highway Patrol officer shot dead on San Diego Highway

A California Highway Patrol officer was shot dead Wednesday night while investigating an accident on a San Diego freeway, a report said.

The unidentified eight-year-old CHP veteran had responded to a collision on I-8 around 6:15 p.m. when he “was involved in a fight with a pedestrian that resulted in a single gunshot,” CPH Capt. Michael Harris said a press conference streamed by KGTV.

The officer was shot in the right thigh and was in serious but stable condition, officials said.

The suspected shooter was arrested with the help of bystanders, according to the CHP.

“There were some Good Samaritans there and they helped subdue the suspect and for that we are very, very grateful,” Harris said.

According to Harris, “it has not yet been determined” whether the officer fired his gun.

“We are all very confident that he will make a full and speedy recovery,” the captain said of his injured officer. California Highway Patrol officer shot dead on San Diego Highway
