A California man who hacked into thousands of iCloud accounts to steal nude photos from young women was sentenced to nine years in prison on Thursday, federal prosecutors said.

Hao Kuo Chi, who called himself “icloudripper4you,” stole private photos and videos by illegally hacking into Apple accounts, according to the US Attorney for the Central District of Florida.

The 41-year-old hacker then shared the images on his now-defunct website, which was notorious for soliciting “revenge porn” from victims, prosecutors said.

Authorities said Chi “led a campaign of terror” when he searched online for nude pictures, which he would describe as “victories.” Once he got his hands on them illegally, he traded them with other people he met on his website Anon-IB, prosecutors said.

Chi pleaded guilty to conspiracy and computer fraud last October. He could have faced 20 years in prison.

“This man directed a campaign of terror from his computer that terrified hundreds of victims,” said David Walker, the FBI’s Tampa special agent in charge.

Chi’s email accounts contained the iCloud credentials of about 4,700 victims and revealed that he had sent stolen content to conspirators more than 300 times, US prosecutors said.

Some of these conspirators then released these images publicly.

He also kept many pictures to himself – linked to 500 victims – and stored a whopping 3.5 terabytes of data on iCloud and physical storage. A terabyte is equal to 1,024 gigabytes.

“Chi has harassed hundreds of women across the country, leaving them fearing for their safety and reputation,” U.S. Attorney Roger Handberg said in a statement. “This sentence reflects the US Attorney’s determination to hold cybercriminals accountable for their crimes.”

The judge who sentenced Chi was U.S. District Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle, who rose to fame after she lifted the mask mandate for air travel earlier this year.
