The American owners of the Turf Moor outfit are willing to invest in some valuable rising stars in the future, and Neil comes into their sights as an ideal target.

League One Black Cats could sell if the price is right and Burnley has been running rigorous background checks over the past few days before making an open offer.

Burnley could try his luck for around £3m for England Under-20s – and possibly even strike a deal to buy him and bring him back to Wearside on loan for the promotion campaign.

Meanwhile Thomas Frank’s Brentford could rake in £14m in his bid to buy Nottingham Forest’s widow Brennan Johnson.

However, that still might not be enough to make a deal.

The bees has been buzzing around Johnson, 20, for months.

His form led Prem’s new boys to re-engage their interest and make a better offer.

Newly rich Arsenal, Tottenham and Newcastle have all been linked with the Wales international.

But Forest would love to be promoted this season from the Championship.

They are willing to take the risk even if it means Johnson is nearing the end of his contract and entering his senior year.

And sources close to the deal also reveal Johnson wants to wait and see if a bigger team comes in for him amid Arsenal and Tottenham’s reported interest.
