Bungie becomes a Sony Studio

Sony has announced they want to buy back Bungie to be their newest studio. However, unlike their usual acquisitions, Bungie will not become a PlayStation Studio and will instead operate independently, choosing whether or not they want to release their games on multiple platforms. .

Future for Bungie

The Halo and Life Developers will continue to create and self-publish games across multiple platforms. Right now, the team continues to work Fate 2 and is focusing on expanding that universe. They are also “creating whole new worlds in future IP”. Bungie will not become PlayStation Studio and will instead be a subsidiary of Sony, allowing the company to continue to be run by the current management team, which includes Pete Parsons as Chairman of the Board of Directors treat. The deal will cost Sony $3.6 billion, including the cost of the purchase and any agreed-upon employee incentives.

So how does the agreement benefit each company? Well, Sony will be able to use Bungie’s expertise in games and live service technology to appeal to a larger audience with their future PlayStation Studios games. Sony hopes to be able to reach billions of players. For Bungie, the increased budget meant they immediately started hiring more people to join their development team as they worked on many of their projects.

Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan said:

We’ve had a close partnership with Bungie since the very beginning of the Destiny series, and I couldn’t be more excited to officially welcome the studio to the PlayStation family. This is an important step in our strategy to expand PlayStation’s reach to a wider audience. We understand how important Bungie’s community is to the studio and look forward to supporting them as they remain independent and continue to grow. Like Bungie, our community is at the core of PlayStation’s DNA, and our shared passion for gamers and building the best place to play will now grow even more.
