Bullet Train director shares how he scored celebrity cameos

Brad Pitt’s latest action comedy, Bullet Train, is currently a box office hit, grossing nearly $13 million on its premiere night alone.

Fans are already excited that director David Leitch has scored a few eye-catching celebrity cameos.

[Warning: Major spoilers ahead.]

Pitt, 58, plays the hired killer Ladybug, who boards a bullet train to get a case and encounters several people along the way who are trying to end his life.

Lieitch’s colorful but gory crowd pleasers are co-stars Bad Bunny, Joey King and Aaron Taylor-Johnson – but the filmmaker knew he needed some powerful bonus attractions too.

“When you pay your money and you go to the theater, you want to have a fun time,” Leitch, 46, told Insider about his desire to win secret celebrity scene thieves. “So if I watch ‘Hobbs and Shaw’ or the last ‘Deadpool’ and this movie, cameos really work for me and I embrace them.”

The John Wick boss added: “I look for opportunities, we look for relationships with the actors on set. When the material feels right, I lean into it. You paid your money, you want to be surprised.”

Pitt’s cast mates led the surprise attack: both Channing Tatum, 42, and Ryan Reynolds, 45, left unsuspecting viewers’ jaws dropping as they appeared on screen amid the gory fights and scathing one-liners.

Tatum plays a train commuter who has a quirky but kinky side that lusts after Pitt’s character. Reynolds – who starred in Leitch’s 2018 superhero film Deadpool 2 – also appeared as an assassin named Carver.

Carver was originally supposed to be on the train instead of Ladybug. While his name is mentioned throughout the film, his identity is only revealed at the twisty ending.

Leitch also revealed how pre-existing friendships between these A-listers made the cameos possible.

Background: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood star Pitt made his own cameo as Marvel character Vanisher in Deadpool 2, and the Atomic Blonde director reminded Reynolds of the scene.

“I just hit it [Reynolds] the idea: ‘Why don’t you pay Brad back for the cameo in ‘Deadpool 2′?’ Leitch told Insider. “That was really all it took. He said, ‘I’m in.’ He was really grateful that Brad did that for him, so he really wanted to support us in that.”
