Buffalo, New York police say at least 10 people are dead and one suspect is in custody after a gunman with a rifle and a body armor opened fire at a convenience store in the city.
Police said the shooting took place at Tops on the 1200 block of Jefferson Avenue.
It was not initially clear how many people were hit or how serious their injuries are.
Investigators are investigating whether the alleged gunman live-streamed the massacre and posted a white supremacist manifesto online.
Local, state and federal officials said they were monitoring the situation.
Tops Markets is “shocked and deeply saddened” by the shooting
Grocery chain Tops Friendly Market said it was “shocked and deeply saddened” by the shooting that took place at one of its stores in Buffalo, New York on Saturday, which left at least 10 people dead.
“We are shocked and deeply saddened by this senseless act of violence, and our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families,” the chain told News 4 Buffalo in a statement. “Our top priority remains the health and well-being of our customers. We appreciate the quick response from local law enforcement and are committing all available resources to assist the authorities with the ongoing investigation.”

The shooting took place in a predominantly black neighborhood about 3 miles north of downtown Buffalo.
According to unconfirmed media reports, the alleged shooter wrote in the manifesto: “If I want you to take away anything from these writings, it is that white birth rates need to change. Every day the white population is getting smaller.”

A suspect is in custody after a mass shooting at a Tops supermarket in Buffalo, New York, where police say “multiple” victims were hit by gunfire after a gunman opened fire on May 14.
It is unclear how many people were injured and if anyone was killed; The Buffalo Police Department reported multiple injuries.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said she was “closely monitoring” the incident and advised residents to avoid the area.
A statement from the Erie County Sheriff’s Office offers “condolences to the family and friends” of the victims. New York Attorney General Letitia James said, “The whole of New York is on the side of Buffalo after this tragic mass shooting.”

Investigators are also checking whether the suspected shooter, who is in police custody, posted an online manifesto, NBC reports, citing unnamed law enforcement sources.

That Buffalo News reports that 10 people were killed at the Tops grocery store and cites a police officer who spoke at the scene.
The newspaper quoted the officer as saying: “It’s like stepping into a horror movie, but everything is real. It’s like Armageddon. It’s so overwhelming.”
The officer said one of those killed was a recently retired Buffalo police officer who worked as a security guard at the store.
No motive for the shooting has yet been suggested.

A witness told CNN that the gunman was wearing army uniforms and a bulletproof vest. The eyewitness said the man, whom he described as white, held a gun under his chin before placing it on the ground and surrendering to police officers.
