Speaking to reporters in a farewell press conference Thursday after announcing his surprise departure as coach of the Buccaneers, Bruce Arians ended the media session with a zinger aimed squarely at Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio.
Arians exited the podium before returning for one final message: “One more thing. It was great working with you in the press. You guys were awesome all over the country, okay? Florio, you can write whatever you want. It is in order.”
Arians’ message was greeted with loud laughter and applause from those present at the press conference.
The former coach walked away without further explaining his commitment. However, Florio has been critical of Arians in recent weeks, questioning the coach’s relationship with Tom Brady and speculating the legendary quarterback was trying to force his way to the 49ers. Florio isn’t the only one who believes Brady played a role in Arians’ surprise move from the sidelines.
In Thursday’s press conference, Arians defended his “great relationship” with Brady and denied reports to the contrary.
Afterwards, Florio said he “didn’t buy” Arians’ comments.
Arian will now join Bucs’ front office in a senior advisory role. Tampa Bay defense coordinator Todd Bowles will serve as head coach.
“I wanted to make sure that Todd Bowles had the best chance of success after I left,” Arians said in a statement announcing his retirement from coaching.
During Thursday’s press conference, Arians added: “There is no better time to pass the torch than now.”
Arians’ move to the Tampa Bay front office came just two weeks after Brady decided to lift his retirement and return to the Buccaneers.
