Cherelle, Brittney Griner’s wife, continues to express the pain she feels while the basketball star is imprisoned in Russia.
Griner, the seven-time WNBA All-Star, has detained in Russia for more than three weeks after cannabis vapes were allegedly found in their luggage at the airport.
Cherelle wrote on Instagram Monday that the advice to “stay busy” was inadequate.
“We love you honey!” Cherelle Griner wrote. “People say, ‘Keep busy.’ Still, there isn’t a job in this world that can stop us from wondering if you’re safe.”
She went on to describe the extent of her feelings.
“My heart, our hearts, everyone skips beats every day that pass without hearing from you. I miss your voice. i miss your presence You are our human! There are no words to express this pain. I hurt, we hurt. We await the day when we will love you as family.”
Griner has played in Russia since 2014-15. According to APShe earns more than $1 million a season there – more than four times what she is paid in the WNBA.
The circumstances surrounding her arrest are further complicated by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which has triggered international sanctions against Russia. This complicates any negotiations for their safe return.
Earlier this week, Cherelle Griner called her wife to come home.
“Thank you to everyone who has reached out to me regarding my wife’s safe return from Russia,” Cherelle Griner wrote on Instagram on Saturday. “Your prayers and support are greatly appreciated.
“I love my wife with all my heart so this news comes at one of the most vulnerable moments of my life. I understand that many of you have come to love BG over the years and have concerns and want details. Please respect our privacy as we continue to work to get my wife home safely,” she continued.
The couple has been married since 2019.
