‘Bridgerton’ star hurt by claims she landed role ‘because she’s brown’

Maybe she needs new friends?

Bridgeton Star Charithra Chandran claimed her friends cruelly revealed she was a diversity employee after she was cast in the hugely popular period drama.

The British actress, 25, shared the shocking revelation in an interview The Telegraph on Sunday, describing the comments as “damaging”.

“I’ve had friends say to me, ‘Oh, you got that because you’re brown,’ and that really hurts,” Chandran said. “[And] What’s really scary is that you can start to believe it.”

The starlet, who is of Indian descent, has been cast as debutante Edwina Sharma in the second season of the steamy series, which premieres on Netflix on Friday.

Bridgerton is based on Julia Quinn’s bestselling novels, in which the character Sharma is white.

However, the TV adaptation has diversified the source material, with the series casting stars of different races despite being set in Regency-era England.

Some critics have complained about the “historical inaccuracy” of the multiracial cast, while others have praised the series for its inclusivity.

“I think ‘Bridgerton’ did for television what ‘Hamilton’ did for theatre,” Chandran told the Telegraph. “It encouraged a completely different audience to watch historical drama and romance. And it made us feel like we could be seen on screen.”

Still, the star hopes to see more diversity behind the scenes as well as on screen.

“I’d like to see more crew that’s black and tan. I think that’s really important. We should be careful with some kind of window dressing,” she explained.

The highly anticipated second season of Bridgerton will chronicle the exploits of Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) and his search for a suitable wife.

Chandran will star as Edwina Sharma, who becomes romantically involved with the lead man.

However, a recently released trailer seems to indicate that the romance will be rocky and may be thwarted by Sharma’s sister Kate.

Fans went wild after the trailer was released, and one person wrote on Youtube: “As a black Indian-American woman, for the first time in my life, I can see someone who looks like me being unreservedly considered a desirable love interest in the mainstream media. To be honest, I feel more moved than I thought. I can’t even explain it, representation is so important.”

Season 2 of Bridgerton debuts on Netflix on Friday March 25, 2022.
