Openly gay actress Golda Rosheuvel, who plays Queen Charlotte, continues to act BridgetonShe says earlier in her career she was warned by a director to go into hiding.
The advice “blew my mind,” Rosheuvel recalled on the April 27 episode Just for a changea podcast of the US magazine diversity.
“We talked about being out and proud and representing and whether I should say I’m gay in interviews,” says Rosheuvel, without mentioning the name of the “out gay lesbian director”.
“And it was an absolute no. “You really shouldn’t do that. It could or would ruin your acting career.’”
Rosheuvel says she found the advice confusing at the time, particularly from a colleague. “Love is love,” she said. “It doesn’t matter if it’s between a man and a woman when you’re an actor creating a character.”
Rosheuvel, a well-known stage actor before he was cast in Netflix’s megahit Regency Bridgeton, gave the interview before accepting an Equality Award from the Human Rights Campaign. She says she plans to further discuss this moment in her career at Saturday’s gala event in New York City.
“I am impressed by Golda Rosheuvel’s extraordinary career on stage and in the internationally acclaimed Netflix series Bridgeton and I am so grateful that she is publicly living her life as a queer woman,” said the HRC interim president in a statement announcing the award.
During their wide-ranging diversity In an interview, however, Rosheuvel was surprised. “I never really see myself as anything political. I’m not an activist,” she explained.
Still, her partner of nine, playwright Shireen Mula, has helped Rosheuvel understand how inseparable her career and activism are.

“My partner is always like, ‘The mere fact that you’re on the screen. Just the fact that you’re there Bridgeton as a black, multiracial, cis-lesbian who plays the first black Queen of England. The fact that you’re there is immense.’”
Rosheuvel is to play in a Bridgeton Prequel series about Queen Charlotte’s youth and courtship.
