Breaking into TxDOT facilities removes some traffic cams

AUSTIN (KXAN) – The Texas Department of Transportation says it has experienced multiple break-ins at facilities and some have actually knocked out traffic camera systems.

TxDOT said there have been no arrests so far. The Austin Police Department is handling the investigation.

The department said while it is not known who broke in, indications are that some of the burglars were homeless. They say that in addition to damaged or stolen items, there is evidence of people breaking in to charge cell phones and use space heaters.

While TxDOT says it has taken temporary steps to block access to those buildings, it is looking for more permanent solutions.
