BRASILIA (Reuters) – Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was hospitalized for tests on Monday after feeling “abdominal discomfort”, his communications minister Fabio Faria said.
“He’s fine,” Faria told Reuters, confirming earlier local media reports that the president was taken to the army hospital in Brasilia for tests.
Faria said the president was unwell, had abdominal discomfort and had gone to the hospital to be tested as he had a history of intestinal obstruction.
He will remain in the hospital overnight under observation.
Bolsonaro was hospitalized in January with a healed intestinal obstruction and did not require surgery. The blockade was his most recent complication after being stabbed in the stomach during a campaign freeze in 2018.
He has since had six surgeries for the stab wound and to correct a hernia in the injured area. In July last year, after 11 days of hiccups, he was hospitalized with severe abdominal pain that was treated without surgery.
Bolsonaro, who began campaigning for re-election in October, was scheduled to attend a Republican Party political meeting but did not appear, local media reported.
The party’s president, Marcos Pereira, said at the event that the president instead went to the hospital feeling unwell, an adviser to Pereira said.
