Braxton Berrios is delighted to be reunited with Jets, Zach Wilson

Braxton Berrios has been trying to avoid thinking about his imminent free hand in recent months. But in the last few days that has become impossible.

berios could breathe again on Monday afternoon when He and the Jets have reached an agreement on a two-year, $12 million deal with a $7 million guarantee. Berrios officially signed the deal on Tuesday.

“Obviously it’s been all I could think of for the past few days,” Berrios said in a Zoom call with reporters on Tuesday. “I’m very happy it’s here. I’m very happy that this whole process is over and that I can focus on football again, which is what I should be focusing on now.”

The wide receiver/kick returner had a breakout season in 2021. He was named a first-team All-Pro as a returnee after leading the league in kick return average. He also found a role on offense by clicking with rookie quarterback Zach Wilson. Berrios finished with 46 catches for 431 yards and four touchdowns (two rushings) despite starting only one game.

Berrios said he heard from Wilson shortly after reaching an agreement.

Braxton Berrios of the Jets
Braxton Berrios was an All-Pro as a kick returner for the Jets last season.

“He was one of the first people to come forward,” Berrios said. “He was happy. He was excited. I was the same. We’re really looking forward to picking up where we left off at the end of last year.”

Berrios said Wilson plans to come to South Florida, where Berrios and other Jets live, in the coming weeks for some informal workouts. The team’s official offseason schedule doesn’t begin until next month.

Berrios, 26, became a Jet in 2019 when the team claimed him from the Patriots’ waivers. Three years later, he now has a multi-million dollar contract. Berrios said he always wanted to stay with the Jets and told Agent Drew Rosenhaus not to make money, the only factor in the free hand.

“Of course we’ve had a lot of talks over the past few months,” said Berrios. “Our last one was just that, I have a great relationship here. I have a great thing here with everyone in the building and also on the field. I told him I didn’t want to chase every penny. I wasn’t trying to auction to the highest bidder at the end of the day. That was convenient. This was a great goal for me. That was clear to me throughout the whole process towards him and, of course, towards the media. I’m so happy to be here.” Braxton Berrios is delighted to be reunited with Jets, Zach Wilson
