Roberto Mancini’s team was there slammed in all corners for their meek elimination in the semi-finals of the World Cup play-offs at the hands of their unpopular opponents.

They faced even more criticism after people saw the condition of their dressing room at the Stadio Renzo Barbera in Palermo.

Bottles, scraps of food and even cigarette butts were seen scattered after the Italian team’s exit.

Ahead of the friendly against Turkey, Bonucci addressed the chaos in his pre-match press conference.

He said: “It was a big mistake, next time we will be more careful.

“We were very disappointed and didn’t think that these details sometimes make the difference.

“We will be more careful in the next games, we apologize.”

The Azzurri’s head of communications, Paolo Corbi, added: “It’s an aspect that we underestimated and for which we have already apologized to Palermo Calcio.

“We had to catch the flight to Coverciano and it was a big disappointment, even if we have to say that the condition of the dressing room when we left was not exactly what was shown in the video. It wasn’t just us.”

Embittered by his side’s failure to qualify for Qatar 2022, Bonucci slammed the play-off procedure.

He said: “In the end everything was decided in just one game, that’s an absurd rule.

“We come here and play home and away and then it ends like this.

“There are teams that have been selected in other confederations and have lost four or five games.

“And we were eliminated by a goal in the 92nd minute in our only defeat. This new formula is a real madness.”

Bonucci, 34, may have been referring to Uruguay and Ecuador, who both qualified despite losing six qualifiers.
