Bobby Brown speaks openly about child abuse that changed his life

Bobby Brown has spoken openly about the child abuse he suffered which he says changed the course of his life.

A new documentary called Biography: Bobby Brown chronicles the R&B singer’s rise to fame, struggles with substance abuse, his marriage to Whitney Houston, and other traumas.

In the series, Brown recounts a terrifying childhood anecdote that happened after he was “sent by social services to a temporary detention facility that was supposed to be a religious location.”

Brown said: “One of the priests tried to molest me. He tried to touch my privates. I was a little boy then. I didn’t know what sexual boundaries were. All I knew was that I didn’t like being touched. Some things are hard to forget.”

In a new interview with People Ahead of the premiere of the two-part series, the “My Prerogative” singer addressed the impact the abuse had on his life.

“That really, really bothered me as a kid and as an adult,” Brown said.

“I think part of the reason I was doing things, other things, drugs, alcohol, was that I was abusing myself.”

While the star said he didn’t plan on revealing such a painful memory, he added that talking about it “helped me get over a lot of other things that bothered me, especially that.”

Biography: Bobby Brown premieres May 30 on A&E in the US.
