Blizzard is working on a survival game set in “a whole new universe”

Blizzard is developing a survival game for PC and consoles set in “a whole new universe.”

The untitled project marks a whole new direction for the studio known for its classic action RPG Diablo, MMORPG World of Warcraft, real-time strategy StarCraft and team shooter Overwatch.

“Blizzard is embarking on our next mission,” Blizzard said of its new project. “We’re on a journey to a whole new universe, home to an all-new survival game for PC and consoles. A place full of heroes we haven’t met, stories that haven’t come yet. Told and untold adventures. A vast field of possibilities, waiting to be discovered.”

Blizzard is calling for interested talent to apply for several key positions on the survival game’s development team including senior character artist, level designer, and lead software engineer. The higher-level positions, such as director and executive producer, appear to have been filled, which suggests that the game has been conceptualized to some extent.

In some of the artwork accompanying the announcement, you can see a few figures looking out over a natural archway towards a towering castle. There was a single bike leaning against some large rocks and what appears to be the city skyline today is peeking above the trees. This is just speculation, but the art could suggest some sort of detached world that combines elements of classic fantasy with a more modern setting.

Blizzard only says it’s coming to “PC and console”, but who knows what platform it’s specifically referring to. Microsoft bought Activision Blizzard for nearly $70 billion last week, paving the way for all future Blizzard projects to become Xbox console exclusives, but Xbox has since signaled its intention to keep a number of cross-platform games.
