Billie Eilish hasn’t said she wants “to be poor” to relate to most of her fans.

Many social media users have shared a made-up quote crediting the 20-year-old singer with wanting to be poor to be able to relate to her fans.

However, Reuters’ fact-checking division has refuted the speculation, revealing that the quote came from a Twitter page unaffiliated with Eilish.

The fake post, which was shared widely on Facebook, reads: “In a new interview, Billie says she cried when she got rich and ‘wanted to be poor so I can relate to most of my fans. ‘”

The post also includes a photo of the Happier than ever Singer who reads, “‘When I got rich I started to gouge my eyes out, I wanted to be poor so I could relate to most of my fans.’ said Billie frankly. “I still want to be broke and poor, it looks really fun and cute.” said Billie laughing.”

The text of the fake post does not include the publication name and date.

“Your best source for 7-time Grammy winner Billie Eilish. NOT affiliated with anything Billie Eilish-related,” read the account’s bio.

Eilish’s rep, Alexandra Baker, also confirmed to the outlet that the post is fake.
