Bill Maher says Twitter “failed” for censoring Post’s report on Hunter Biden’s laptop

Comedian Bill Maher is all for Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter, saying the company needs a “new sheriff” after failing to comply with the first amendment — particularly when it ditched the New York Post from the platform after the newspaper had published the bombshell hunter biden laptop report 2020.

“The argument for me is, has Twitter historically failed to establish itself as the judge of what can happen out there? And I’d say yes, you did,” the comic said on HBO’s Real Time on Friday.

“You failed when you threw the New York Post from Twitter for talking about the Hunter Biden emails. And it turned out to be a true story. You failed when you said we couldn’t read if COVID came from a lab. You failed!”

Along with MSNBC’s Ali Velshi and former Sen. Doug Jones (D-Ala.), Maher railed against censorship on Twitter — which was recently bought by Musk in a huge $44 million takeover with his rumored goal of shutting the company down privatize and restore freedom of speech.

After The Post report was published in October 2020, Twitter suspended the newspaper from its account for more than two weeks over baseless allegations that the exposé used hacked information.

Twitter also blocked users from sharing the link to a Post article that suggested Hunter Biden had introduced President Joe Biden to the Ukrainian businessman, calling the link “potentially harmful.”

Facebook also said it would limit the distribution of The Post’s story on its own platform.

In November 2020, former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey said Twitter made a “mistake” by blocking users from sharing The Post’s revealing account of Hunter Biden’s emails.

“We recognize that not allowing people to share it publicly or privately is a mistake we made, both in terms of policy intent and enforcement action,” Dorsey said during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing , in which he and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg were grilled by lawmakers about their companies’ influence and perceived anticonservative bias.

During a House Energy and Commerce Committee hearing on misinformation and social media in March 2021, Dorsey said the Post’s blackout was a “process error.”

“It was literally just a process error. It was in no way against her,” Dorsey told Congress.

Just last month, both the Washington Post and the New York Times confirmed the existence of Hunter Biden’s laptop after “examining a cache of files that appear to be from a laptop left by Mr. Biden at a Delaware repair shop.” ‘ authenticated by people involved in the investigation into Biden’s business dealings, The Times wrote.
