Biden’s radical Title IX plan would kill women’s sport

When Title IX became law in 1972, I was a competitive swimmer in high school. In my hometown of Holland, Michigan, I was fortunate that girls weren’t denied the opportunity to compete in sports, as were far too many elsewhere in our country. The landmark law aimed to end such shameless sexism.

Fifty years later – on orders from people on the fringes – the Biden administration is taking steps to end women’s sport as we know it.

After decades of progress for women athletes, the White House has just proudly proclaimed it intends to change the plaintext of Title IX. The law states: “No person in the United States shall be excluded, denied benefits, or discriminated against because of their sex from participation in any educational program or activity that receives federal financial assistance.”

The Biden team is excited Redefining “sex” from its clear biological and legal meaning includes “gender stereotypes, sex-related characteristics (including intersex characteristics), pregnancy or related diseases, sexual orientation and gender identity”.

The impact of such a major change is unmistakable. The proposal would make it illegal for a school or state to ban biological males from competing against females.

This all-encompassing approach, including nebulous terms like “gender stereotypes,” might even require schools to eliminate the limited and inadequate requirements that apply today, such as: B. the requirement that transgender athletes receive hormone therapy before competition. It will put biological women at a permanent competitive disadvantage.

Just ask the women who recently lost at the NCAA championships to University of Pennsylvania swimmer Lia Thomas. Thomas began her college career on the men’s team before coming out as a trans woman and breaking women’s records.

No wonder: Even with hormone suppression or replacement, biological males retain an advantage over females. As The New Yorker noted last month, “People who have undergone testosterone-fueled puberty have, on average, greater cardiovascular capacity, greater muscle mass, greater mechanical strength of tendons, and denser bones. They tend to be stronger and larger and have longer wingspans.”

Many of Thomas’ teammates and competitors rightly called the NCAA’s arrangement unfair. President Joe Biden’s proposal would make it law in the country.

The administration will do this for one reason: they want it. Congress has not acted, which is why our system of government requires such changes. The courts have not commented on this. The American people do not support this move. But none of that deters the White House. This is standard procedure for Biden and the far-left Democrats who populate his administration.

The bureaucrats driving this change are the same people who sent out the infamous “Dear Colleague” letter in 2011 that decimated the protections of lawsuits on college campuses. Students accused of sexual misconduct have all too often been denied access to evidence, cross-examination and even the presumption of innocence in Title IX cases.

This bureaucratic overkill led to the creation of kangaroo courts on most college campuses and devastating miscarriages of justice across the country. hundrets of Court judgments have confirmed Their approach was unfair and truly un-American.

While serving as Secretary of Education, I oversaw a very lengthy regulatory process to strengthen and re-enforce the protections of Title IX. Alarmingly, the Biden proposal is likely to be crushed these also legal protection.

It’s almost impossible to overstate how radical the White House’s approach to Title IX is. It goes beyond partisan lines, clear and long-established legal boundaries, and the political preferences of a large majority of Americans.

This agenda has even been criticized by transgender Olympic champion Caitlyn Jenner, who called Ensuring that sport remains gender segregated is “not transphobic or anti-trans, it’s common sense!” Tennis champion and LGBT activist Martina Navratilova has said called All rules should be based on “biology and evidence and science” – and any approach based on gender self-identification “would clearly not be a level playing field”.

The bottom line is that the Biden administration’s proposal will do significant harm to young women who count on the promise of Title IX. Young women work hard and train daily to become the next great female gold medalist or national champion. You deserve the opportunity to compete as equals. And that can only be guaranteed by maintaining the biological distinctions that have always existed in sport.

There is a way to protect the dreams of young female athletes across the country: Stop the White House’s Title IX proposal to wipe out women’s sports.
