More than 38 million Americans tuned in to President Biden Address of the State of the Union on Tuesday, the lowest viewership for the first SOTU by a Commander-in-Chief in at least 30 years.
According to Nielsen Media Research, Approximately 27.4 million households watched Biden’s hour-long speech live on 16 different networks, with a rating of 22.4.
In contrast, Donald Trump’s first official State of the Union address in 2018 received a rating of 26.9, with an estimated 45.5 million viewers tuning in.
In 2010, more than 48 million Americans watched Barack Obama’s first State of the Union (rating 29.8) and more than 51.8 tuned in to hear George W. Bush in 2002 (rating 33.6). In 1994, an estimated 45.8 million Americans watched Bill Clinton deliver his first official State of the Union address (32.9 rating).
Ratings for Tuesday’s speech were a notable improvement on Biden’s speech before a joint session of Congress last April, which attracted nearly 27 million viewers and received a rating of 16.5. This speech is not considered an official State of the Union address because Biden has not been in office for at least a year.
Viewership for Biden on Tuesday also topped that of Trump’s most recent State of the Union address in February 2020, which drew just over 37.1 million people.
Fox News Channel won the night in terms of total viewership, with its coverage attracting an average of 7.2 million people. according to the Associated Press. According to the network, Biden’s speech received FNC’s highest ratings for a Union state from a Democratic president.
ABC ranked second that night, averaging 6.3 million viewers, while CBS reported 4.9 million and CNN 4.8 million. NBC followed closely with 4.7 million viewers and MSNBC attracted 4.1 million. The Fox network closed far behind with just 1.9 million viewers.
Nielsen said its numbers take into account viewers outside the home as well as those who watched the speech on connected television (CTV) platforms like Roku. According to the company, the latter group could make up as much as 13 percent of viewers of “televisioned political events.”
