Biden salutes the Buffalo Guard who died trying to stop the mass shooting

President Biden on Monday praised Security Guard Aaron Salter Jr., who died Saturday while trying to defend grocery store customers during a mass shooting in Buffalo.

Salter, 55, drew his gun and opened fire on suspect Payton Gendron, who was wearing body armor, but was shot dead and died at the scene along with nine others.

“We pay tribute to all law enforcement officers and families who understand what it takes, what it takes to risk, to save and keep us all safe,” Biden said at a White House event where he presented the Medal of Valor to 15 other heroic police officers and firefighters presented .

“And that includes paying tribute to Buffalo Police Officer Aaron Salter — Slater, excuse me, who gave his life trying to save others when a gunman shot dead 10 innocent people at a Buffalo grocery store on Saturday ‘ the President continued.

“He could actually shoot the attacker twice, but he [Gendron] was wearing a bulletproof vest. And he [Salter] lost his life in the process. No one understands more than all of you here today the pain and anguish felt by these Buffalo families.”

18-year-old Gendron is said to have been motivated by anti-black racism. He is accused of shooting 13 people, including 11 black people.

Biden is scheduled to visit Buffalo on Tuesday to meet with members of the community affected by the tragedy.

Biden presented the Medal of Valor to 15 police officers and firefighters Monday — some of whom died performing recent acts of heroism. Among those honored was Spring Valley, NY firefighter Jared Lloyd, 35, who died last year while rescuing elderly residents from a nursing home burning.

Firefighter Abraham Miller of the New York City Fire Department was also awarded a medal for having to rappel from a six-story building in Washington Heights to save a 5-year-old girl from a fire. One of Miller’s colleagues held the rope because there was nothing else to anchor it to.
