Biden lets Putin lead nuclear talks with Iran

Some stories make so little sense that you can only scratch your head. Others are so annoying you want to pull your hair out. Then there are those that are so outrageous that your head feels like it’s about to explode.

This story provokes all three reactions.

It starts with a strange, little-known fact: Russia acts as a mediator for the United States in Iran nuclear talks.

When I first read this I thought this can’t possibly be true. with Russia then rallied troops on the Ukrainian borderI assumed that even the Biden White House couldn’t be stupid enough to trust Vladimir Putin to do anything in good faith or certainly anything in the American interest.

Unfortunately, the story was true, and even more alarmingly, Russia continues to lead the nuclear talks with America’s approval, while its army turns at the same time Ukraine’s cities in ruinsmercilessly killing civilians and causing the largest refugee crisis since World War II.

In response, the US and Europe sanctioned Russia’s economy and Putin’s cronies. The West also supplies arms to Ukraine and helps care for more than 2 million refugees.

But shouldn’t America also sever relations with Putin in the Iran talks? After all, since we don’t trust him in Ukraine and want to isolate him, why should we trust him if Iran gets nuclear weapons?

It has always defied common sense for Biden to believe that Putin cares about protecting America and our allies, including Israel, in negotiations with the mad mullahs. So now it’s time to correct the error.

The New Axis of Evil

In case Biden and his team somehow overlooked the ample evidence of Putin’s depraved nature, Russia’s alliance with Iran in Syria and elsewhere should have ended any viewing of him as an honest broker.

The developments of the last week now seem inevitable due to the Iran-Russia alliance. First came reports that the nuclear talks were over and the deal could be signed any day, prompting jubilant boasts from the anti-US side.

A video distributed by Real Clear Politics shows Russia’s chief negotiator Mikhail Ulyanov praising his Iranian “colleagues” and saying they were “fighting for… [their] national interest like lions. They fight for every comma, every word and usually quite successfully.”

He added: “I am absolutely sincere in this regard when I say that Iran has gotten much more than it could have expected. Our Chinese friends were also very efficient and helpful negotiating partners.”

There you have it, the new axis of evil – Russia, China and Iran – are working together on the nuclear pact. Who, please, fought for our side?

And what exactly did Iran get?

There was another twist that also involved the Russians. days later the The talks hit a wall because Putin added a demand that a final nuclear deal would free Russia’s trade with Iran from the sanctions the US and Europe have imposed on Ukraine.

It was a clever ploy knowing how badly Biden wanted the Iran deal and the oil supply he was going to put on the market. The White House’s initial response was that there was no link between sanctions on Russia and the nuclear talks, but that likely won’t be the last word if talks stall.

Regardless, the reality is that the two tracks that were supposedly parallel and unrelated – the Ukraine war and sanctions on the one hand, and the Iran talks on the other – have suddenly merged. The standstill would be considered good news if the entire Iran deal were to be scrapped, but the White House would still have to explain its outrageous deal with Putin.

The US is hungry for a deal

In terms of the general facts, we know what they knew and when they knew it.

It turns out that Russia has been used as a broker with Iran for many months, predating Putin’s troop deployment on the border with Ukraine.

But even after he began positioning his military for the invasion, Biden still had faith that Putin would deliver a verifiable deal that would prevent Iran from getting nuclear weapons.

For example, last January 24, NATO announced it was preparing for a possible Russian invasion, saying: “The Allies are preparing forces and sending additional ships and warplanes to NATO operations in Eastern Europe. . . while Russia continues its military build-up in and around Ukraine.”

Denmark, Spain, France and others began mobilizing troops, ships and fighter planes. The Pentagon said there were 8,500 American soldiers put on “high alert” for foreign assignments.

But that same week, Secretary of State Tony Blinken urged Russia to press ahead with nuclear talks. NBC News quoted Blinken as saying, “Russia shares our sense of urgency, the need to see if we can return to mutual compliance in the coming weeks, and we hope that Russia will use its influence and relationship with Iran to change.” to give Iran that sense of urgency.”

Worse, that desperate hunger for a deal didn’t change after Putin’s invasion in February, which coincided with a speech in which he said Ukraine wasn’t even a country and made ominous references to other former Soviet countries that are now are free, including some in NATO.

Even now, despite the accusation that Putin is committing war crimes and despite Warnings of a third world war and nuclear Armageddon, Biden continues to let Putin negotiate terms with Iran on our behalf.

Biden was played again

The superficial explanation for this is simple: Iran refuses to meet directly with American negotiators, so a mediator was needed. But why Russia?

The most likely reason is that Iran and Russia maneuvered the US into supporting the Russian role. Consider this another foreign policy blunder by Biden, Blinken and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, aka the three blind mice.

Still, the question remains why Biden didn’t end the deal when Putin launched the Ukraine invasion. And why doesn’t he stop it now, when the mounting slaughter in Ukraine is horrifying the world?

It is possible that he wants to maintain a relationship in case Putin wants an exit from Ukraine. But Putin increasingly seems to have a different interpretation, namely that Biden is weak and easily deterred from confrontation.

If so, we could end up with the worst possible outcome in either case: no end to the bloodshed in Ukraine and a bad nuclear deal with Iran.

Meanwhile, Biden is maintaining his restrictions on American energy production while scouring the dictators’ phone book for gas and oil wells to replace the Russian fuel he’s embargoed on.

Of course, as Robert Gates famously said, our President “was wrong on almost every major issue of foreign policy and national security for the past four decades.”

He’s also the same man Barack Obama said of, “Don’t underestimate Joe’s ability to screw things up.”

Why should it be different this time?
