Beyoncé’s new album Renaissance topped the Billboard 200 albums chart, becoming the first woman to achieve that rank in 2022.
The last musician at number 1 was Adele with her album 2021 30
Renaissance is the first of a “three act project” and features contributions from Jay-Z, 070 Shake, Tems and more.
It contains 16 tracks including the lead single “Break My Soul”.
The album is Beyoncé’s first solo studio album since 2016 lemonadein which she addressed issues such as infidelity, black femininity and forgiveness.
A press release for Renaissance shares the singer’s decision to deviate from the visual album format.
Beyoncé “decided to perform without visuals to allow fans the opportunity to be limitless in their extended listening journey,” the statement read. “It’s a chance to be a listener again, not a spectator, while taking in every gem of the flawless production.”
The release also refers to Renaissance as “a celebration of a club era when those who felt like outsiders sought each other out and formed a community of freedom seekers to creatively express themselves through the rhythm we still celebrate today”.
Corresponding billboard, Renaissance records the biggest streaming week for a woman’s album in 2022 by official on-demand streams earning $179 million.
It’s also the seventh-biggest streaming debut of any album in 2022 and Beyoncé’s biggest-ever streaming week.
This news comes after Beyonce removed the interpolation from Kelis’ track “Milkshake” on her new album.
She made the decision after Kelis claimed it was sampled without permission on the Break My Soul singer’s new album.
