Among the more than 50 people shot dead in the Big Apple over a bloody Fourth of July weekend was a beloved “grandfather” from the Bronx neighborhood, who was gunned down by cluster bullets.
John Edwards, 62, – who was known in his Belmont neighborhood as the “grandfather of the bloc” – was among at least seven people killed during the gun violence outbreak
“I’ve known him since I was 10,” Rachel Sanchez said of Edwards, who died in Belmont’s arms around 10:30 p.m. Monday in Belmont after being fatally wounded by a stray bullet. “We are his family.”
Sanchez, 30, said Edwards is known to locals as the grandfather or godfather of the neighborhood where she grew up – and came back on Sunday to pay her respects.
“He sat in that chair every day,” she said. “That was his section. When you needed the pump, he turned the pump on. If you wanted your car cleaned, he would clean your car. When we were grilling and the girl was too busy cleaning, he would clean the grill. If you were heartbroken, he knew it.
“He knew how to make you feel better,” Sanchez said. “He will be missed.
Neighbors said Edwards was fed up with rising crime in the Big Apple and finally decided it was time to leave his beloved neighborhood – which is now devastated.
“Don’t you see the sadness on the block?” Sanchez asked Tuesday. “My heart is not here. Do you know how many years I’ve known this man? This man was real.”
In total, 51 people have been shot in 36 separate incidents since Friday, a jump to the 32 people shot in 27 shootings over the holiday weekend last year, NYPD statistics show.
Twenty-one of this year’s bank holiday weekend victims were shot dead on Monday, Independence Day.
