Bay Area News Group Athlete of the Week: Jacob Kuverji, Leland Basketball Team

In an extremely close vote, Leland basketball player Jacob Kuverji was the Bay Area News Group’s all-boys high school athlete for the week of January 10-16 after finishing first in the poll.

When voting closed at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Kuverji had 7,327 votes (45.67%), well ahead of Mission San Jose soccer player Noel Estrada (7,080 votes, 44.13 percent).

Branham footballer Ian Hutt came in third.

Congratulations to all the candidates for this week’s recognition.

Kuverji scored 21 points to lead Leland to a 67-63 victory in extra time over Leigh in a crucial Blossom Valley Athletic League Mt. Hamilton Division. The result lifted the Chargers’ record to 14-0 overall and 2-0 in the league.

Earlier in the week, Kuverji, a senior, scored 15 points in a 65-41 game at Piedmont Hills.
