It’s a Barbie world; we just live in it.
Thanks to the excitement sparked by Greta Gerwig’s work in progress, Barbie, the iconic Mattel doll is no longer confined to toy shelves.
Inspired by upcoming movie star Margot Robbie and her parade of pretty pink outfits, many Barbie girls have taken to TikTok and brought the BarbieCore trend to life.
The hashtag #BarbieCore has more than 7 million views on TikTok and according to Google Trends data, interest in Barbie has never been higher as fans await the live-action movie to be released in 2023.
But it’s Robbie’s uncanny resemblance to the original blonde Barbie that’s got hordes of people – and celebrities – thinking pink.
Photos of the 31-year-old Australian baby in a pink Corvette and rollerblading on Venice Beach – with Robbie all pink, of course – sent fans reeling on TikTok, where the hashtag #MargotRobbieBarbie has already racked up 4.2 million views at once Year listed matter of days.
“I just want to say that seeing these paparazzi photos from the making of ‘Barbie’ makes me want to watch this movie so freaking bad,” gushed TikToker Kirbie Johnson in a clip that has racked up over 325,000 views.
It’s not just women who crave Barbie, the most popular children’s toy of all time, which celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2019. The three-time Oscar nominee’s highly-anticipated film received the endorsement of Marvel’s Shang-Chi star Simu Liu, who signed on to Gerwig’s film after his agent called the Barbie screenplay one of the best he’d read , and had convinced him to audition for a role.
“He literally said that, verbatim,” Liu told GQ UK. “He was like, ‘If I could build my career on one script, it would be the ‘Barbie’ script. I really think you should.'”
Director Gerwig, known for the Oscar-winning “Lady Bird”, gives the age-old plastic classic a new twist. While people might think they know what a movie about Barbie, a 1959 doll, has in store, it might not be the play that moviegoers are expecting.
“I wish I could just show you what we do every day because it’s crazy,” Liu revealed to GQ UK, describing the set as “wild” and “incredibly unique”.
While Gerwig may expand Barbie beyond the dollhouse, Robbie’s costumes, created by Oscar-winning Little Women costume designer Jacqueline Durran, have entered the fashion zeitgeist, with women – and A-listers – finding fashion inspiration in the Finding the aesthetics of the iconic toy.
On Tuesday, Megan Fox rocked her own take on the fuchsia fashion trend – and had a real Barbie and Ken moment with fiancé Machine Gun Kelly.
Khloe Kardashian is no stranger to being at the forefront of trends, Khloe Kardashian was a Barbie girl for her birthday on Tuesday, while sister Kim, now a pale blonde, shared a snap to Instagram in early June, complete with pink tights, a matching short hoodie and, of course, a bag from Balenciaga.
“I would say it’s definitely future alien Barbie vibes,” said the SKKN founder, describing her style muse just last week.
Hailey Bieber also had her own bombshell Barbie moment when she wore a bubblegum pink Versace corseted mini dress from the Fall Winter 2022 collection in a sexy Instagram snap on Wednesday.
Even brunettes were tickled pink, with Lizzo sporting a magenta hue in matching Valentino gloves, tights and dress, along with sleek, doll-like high bangs, at a screening in early June alongside style stars like Penélope Cruz, Zendaya and Cardi B, Sydney Sweeny and more.
Fellas are also getting into the trend – apart from Robbie’s co-star Ryan Gosling, who portrayed Barbie’s Beau Ken in set photos. Along with Machine Gun Kelly, Sebastian Stan rocked a Valentino number in the playful shade at the Met Gala.
High fashion is also ringing in the hue and declaring pink to be the new black. Valentino designer Pierpaolo Piccioli collaborated with Pantone to present a collection in perfect pink for the Fall/Winter 2022 season – even the background, floors, seats and catwalk were in the same shade, making the palette dazzling.
“Pink is rampant everywhere,” the Italian house told Forbes, calling it “a liberation from the need for realism.”
Meanwhile, fashion stylist Shea Daspin, who recently styled Zoe Margaret Colletti head-to-toe pink, told InStyle that Barbie “represents a lot more” than the color pink.
“She represents ambition and female agency,” Daspin said, “and that can manifest in how someone dresses or who they want to become.”
