Balenciaga is selling Bridget Jones-esque briefs for $225

Go grandma!

The bulky underwear known as granny panties are having a high fashion moment.

Historic European fashion house Balenciaga – known for making It bags for Kate Moss, dressing Hollywood’s elite on the red carpet and dressing Kim Kardashian in police tape – made headlines with a pair of ribbed jersey briefs. The high-waisted, Italian-made underwear leaves a lot to the imagination and isn’t what most would consider hot, but it’ll set you back a cool $225. And they are dry-clean only.

The not-so-naughty briefs draw comparisons to those worn by Renée Zellweger in the 2001 rom-com Bridget Jones’s Diary. In a memorable moment, Hugh Grant rips down Zellweger’s skirt to reveal a surprising selection of romantic lingerie that Grant says are “absolutely huge panties”.

Balenciaga panties are available in several practical colors: white, black, brown, beige and a particularly attractive “light beige”. The label also offers several variations of granny panties at slightly more affordable prices, such as the low-waist panty, a relative steal at $150.

This isn’t the first time Balenciaga has made headlines with unusual underwear. It was only last September that the label came under criticism for selling jogging pants called “Trompe-L’Oeil” with boxer shorts woven into them. Taking to social media, people accused the fashion house of racism for “gentrifying sagging”.

In comparison, granny panties are tame in more ways than one. And while they may remind some of their elders, they’re actually quite modern, according to Colleen Hill, author of Exposed: A History of Lingerie and curator of costumes and accessories at the Museum at FIT.

“Today, sexiness means feeling comfortable and confident in your own skin. Over the past decade, we’ve seen an interest in lingerie styles that promote body positivity and ease of wear over traditionally sexy or daring styles,” Hill told The Post. “It’s also appealing not to take yourself too seriously.”
