Baker Mayfield watches Seahawks re-sign Geno Smith

Baker Mayfield knows his best remaining shot at becoming an NFL quarterback in 2022 is with the Seahawks, whose quarterback room is filling up.

Seattle on Thursday re-signed former Jet Geno Smith, Smith said Josina Anderson of CBS Sports. He was given a one-year, $7 million contract. according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Smith, 31, was with the Seahawks the last three seasons and had four games (three starts) in 2021 when Russell Wilson was injured, throwing for 702 yards, five touchdowns and one interception in those games.

The Seahawks don’t have a definitive starting quarterback after selling Wilson to the Broncos. They received Denver’s Drew Lock from the second round in 2019, brought back Smith and also have Jacob Eason.

Mayfield, 27, wants the Browns to trade him after they took over Deshaun Watson and gave Watson a fully guaranteed five-year, $230 million deal. During an appearance this week on the Ya Neva Know podcast, Mayfield said he felt “disrespected” by the Browns, who drafted Mayfield first overall in the 2018 NFL Draft.

A wild NFL offseason featured a number of key quarterback moves, including the Colts acquiring Matt Ryan from the Falcons after selling Carson Wentz to the Commanders, making the Seahawks one of the few, if only logical, landing spots for Mayfield stayed.

Asked in the podcast If he had known which team he was going to end up with, Mayfield said, “Oh man, if that was like a week and a half ago I would have said Indianapolis. Seattle? I mean it would probably be the most likely option. But even then…”

Mayfield then threw his hands in the air.

“I’m ready for the next chapter,” Mayfield said.
