Baby rescued: Carjacker dumps baby on New Orleans street, police say

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana — A one-year-old has returned safely to his family after a life-threatening incident.

New Orleans authorities said the baby was in a vehicle that was ambushed and later abandoned at the side of a busy road.

Brian Stewart says he was on his way to work on Wednesday morning when he saw something unusual on the Almonaster Boulevard flyover to the east.

“I was just driving. On the way to the landfill. I saw an object on the side of the road. As I got closer I thought maybe it was a baby doll or something. As I got closer, I realized there was a real person there,” said Steward. “I stopped at the side of the road. Decreased. The baby started to kind of crawl towards me. I called 911. When I spoke to him on the phone and told him who I was and all, an officer pulled out. I stopped him.”

Local officials believe 21-year-old Johnathon Perkins drove away in a white Subaru parked in front of a shop on the street, not realizing there was a baby in the car.

Police believe Perkins left the 1-year-old on the bridge before exiting the vehicle.

The parents later reunited with their baby.

“For the family. I’m glad they got their baby back safely and that tonight he’s alive and well. Because he was really brave,” Stewart said.

As for Stewart, he says he just did what anyone would do if they saw a baby in danger on the shoulder of a busy overpass.

“I would expect everyone to do the same. I just stopped and didn’t want to leave him there. So I just did what I thought everyone else would do,” Stewart said.

Perkins is wanted on numerous charges, including the aggravated kidnapping of a youth.

Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to contact the authorities.
