Avril Lavigne says ‘Bite Me’ is ‘a female empowerment song’

Avril Lavigne has always been great at creating pop punk music. And her latest single “Bite Me” is no exception. The singer recently opened up about the meaning behind the song and how it relates to the rest of her new album. Dear Sux.

In conversation with The forty-five, Lavigne shared that “Bite Me” is “a female empowerment song.” She notes that the tune is about “knowing your worth and knowing what you deserve.” Adds Lavigne, “It’s about saying goodbye to a toxic relationship.”
The lyrics reflect this, with lines describing a partner who regrets destroying their relationship. “Don’t act so innocent/It wasn’t a coincidence,” sings Lavigne. “You planned this in the end, and now it’s over.”
The catchy chorus continues with that empowerment theme, with the “I’m with you” Artist sings, “Should have held on, should’ve treated me right // I gave you one chance, you don’t get it twice // Eh-oh, and we’ll never be together, so baby you can bite me.”
The rest of the album follows the lead of that single. “The whole record is like that,” Lavigne explained. “It’s just guitar-heavy and up-tempo, and a lot of it feels like the record I’ve wanted to make for a long time.”
She also spoke about the musicality of Dear Sux. “I wanted to do full distorted electric guitars, live drums and just super powerful, anthemic rock songs.”

Regarding their previous albums, like the ones from 2019 head above waterLavigne explained Dear Sux feels lighter.
“I make my albums and they represent different points in my life,” the rocker said. “My last album was more serious. It was deeper than it was darker. This album is lighter and fun and fun.”
The music video for “Bite Me” is just as fun as the song that sees Lavigne and her band rock out and destroy her ex’s apartment. There’s even a special appearance by Blink-182’s drummer Travis Barker, who played drums on the track and helped Lavigne create the songs for her new album. Barker even distributed the album through his DTA label.
“He was a huge help in bringing this album to life,” said the singer. “We all went into the studio and before we knew it we had 30 songs. Nothing was forced at all, it just happened.”

Fans are loving the new music, especially the lead single “Bite Me”. Returning to their original pop-punk sound has many listeners reliving their youthful days.
