The search for Mary Dawn Wilson, 69, is focused in the community of Healy, Alaska State Troopers said in a statement. The abandoned Ford Focus was found Thursday on Stampede Road, just outside of Healy and off the Parks Highway.
The child appeared to be in good health and was handed over to the State Office for Children’s Aid, the statement said.
Officials said evidence in the car indicated the child and the car were abandoned on Tuesday when the vehicle became stuck, the soldiers said. There is evidence she tried to extricate the car, Alaska State Troopers spokesman Tim DeSpain said.
Wilson was the last known person with the child, the statement said:
Police officers said it is believed they started walking, but in the opposite direction from the freeway. Various law enforcement agencies, search dogs, and the Alaska Wilderness Search and Rescue organization are searching for her near where the vehicle stopped.
Healy is approximately 10 miles (16 kilometers) north of Denali National Park and Preserve.
Stampede Road is famous for being the main road where adventurers followed in the footsteps of Christopher McCandless, a young idealist whose journey down the Stampede Trail ended in his death.
The Trail Road eventually ends and opens up into the treacherous Alaskan backcountry, where McCandless took refuge in an abandoned city bus after being trapped by the swollen Teklanika River.
He died of starvation in 1992 and his life and death was made famous by the book Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer and then the film directed by Sean Penn.
Over the years, people trying to catch the bus some 25 miles from Healy to make the pilgrimage to McCandless have had to be rescued themselves or died. That prompted state officials to remove the 2020 bus from the backcountry.
The bus is currently being prepared for a permanent outdoor display at the University of Alaska’s Museum of the North in Fairbanks. People can follow the work on the bus via live stream.
