Austin FC loaned Tomás Pochettino to Argentine club River Plate

AUSTIN (KXAN) – What is it? considered a major signing for Austin FC in its first year Major League Soccer has become a bankruptcy, and now midfielder Tomás Pochettino has been loaned to another club.

Austin FC announced on Monday that Pochettino will be joining Atletico River Plate Club, an Argentina-based team, on a one-year loan with the option to buy his contract out afterwards. Pochettino is from Argentina and plays for Talleres, one of the best clubs in the Argentine domestic league. He has been signed as a Designated Player and occupies one of the spots in the team’s international squad.

According to salary data released by the MLS Players Association, Pochettino guaranteed $624,447 in his first year with the club.

The attacking midfielder was heralded as one of the team’s top scorers and assists when he was signed, but his on-field performances were never met with hype. In 31 appearances for Austin FC, he scored just two goals and assisted another two. Both of his goals came in the same game, a 3-2 win over Houston on August 4.

Pochettino-related rumor mill catches fire as Austin FC announced contract extension with captain Alex Ring and made him a Designated Player, making four players with such distinction on the roster. The MLS only allows three DPs per team – these positions are reversed for top level players for whom the club wants to provide more money without going against salary cap restrictions .

Cecilio Dominguez and Sebastian Driussi are other DPs on Austin’s list alongside Ring.

Austin FC opens second season in MLS on February 26 at Q2 Stadium against FC Cincinnati.
