Attackers charged with hate crimes in subway hammer attack

The attacker is blamed hit an Asian with a hammer at a Manhattan subway station has been charged with three hate crimes, police said.

Christian Jeffers, 48, who identifies as a woman, has been charged with assault, aggravated harassment and threats – all as hate crimes – for Tuesday night’s attack on a 29-year-old man at the 14th Street-Union Square station, police officers said.

Jeffers allegedly launched the attack, which was caught on camera, after colliding with the victim on the train station platform.

The victim sustained a laceration to the head and was treated at Bellevue Hospital.

Jeffers fled the scene and was arrested Wednesday when he allegedly jumped the turnstile at a station further west on the 14th Street subway line, sources said.

According to sources, police recovered a hammer from Jeffer’s pocket.

“We’re trying to live our lives the best we can, you know, and it’s just unfortunate that we have to face all of this adversity, along with all of the struggles in life,” the victim said. “It’s just unnecessary conflict and it sucks.”

“It’s unfortunate, you know, the city is what it is,” he added. “Of course something has to happen, something has to change.”
