Atletico Mineiro beat Bahia to win Brazilian title after 50 years of waiting

December 3 – Atletico Mineiro crowns Brazil for the first time in 50 years after beating Bahia 3-2 from behind and cementing an unprecedented top spot.

It took the Belo Horizonte Club to take the first five minutes of the second half to turn the game around thanks to goals from both Hulk and Keno to win the tournament. With the victory, Atletico took the lead with 81 points after 36 matches. Second-placed Flamengo, who lost last Saturday’s all-Brazil Copa Libertadores final, can no longer get past Atletico.

“It has been a magical year and we still have a title to go against Athletico Paranaense,” said Atletico Mineiro coach Cuca, who led the club to its first Copa Libertadores in 2013. “I just have I can’t imagine what the fans went through until we were 2-0 down, they could have yelled and cursed at us. But now, what is the result, how happy is it”.

This season, Atletico Mineiro, along with Flamengo and Palmeiras, have withdrawn from the other big Brazilian clubs, spending on players and building a strong squad. Hulk and Diego Costa have both returned from distant shores to become the spearhead of Atletico’s attack. However, it remains to be seen how competitive the club will be next season. The Brazilian champions also qualify for the Copa Libertadores, South America’s equivalent of the Champions League.

The championship prompted wild celebrations in Belo Horizonte. In 1971, Atletico Mineiro won Brazil’s first tournament, holding back much stronger clubs from Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, with marksman Dario scoring top for Belo Horizonte.
