Thursday’s high-stakes doubles game between the Astros and the Yankees marks the fourth time in the downtown Houston ballpark’s 22-year history that a double dip has occurred at the ballpark.
At other unroofed MLB venues, the two games of a doubleheader day are treated as separate competitions in the record books, usually resulting from being postponed due to inclement weather.

It would be easy to keep the same amount and terms for quick settlement.
But that’s not the case over the decades of baseball.
The stadium must be cleared of all 26,325 spectators in the MMP immediately after the conclusion of the first game. Then the venue staff have just under three hours to clean the grout, almost as if it hadn’t even been touched that same day.
The first pitch of Game 1 was scheduled for 12:10 p.m. The first pitch for the second game is scheduled for 5:10 p.m., barring, of course, an unexpected first extra-inning contest.
This season marked a return to nine-inning games in doubleheader days after the previous two seasons had returned to seven-inning doubleheader contests. You can blame the pandemic for that.
As for reasons for MMP’s other doubleheaders, Hurricane Harvey forced a day-night appearance with the New York Mets on September 2, 2017; The effects of Tropical Storm Laura delayed two games with the Los Angeles Angels to August 25, 2020; and an MLB-wide boycott amid social injustice protests lumped two Oakland Athletics games on Aug. 29, 2020. The latter two doubleheaders were played in front of a stadium without spectators.
