Astros pitcher Jake Odorizzi was carried off the field during Monday’s game against the Red Sox after apparently suffering a leg injury while running to first base to cover the bag.
While pitching to Kiké Hernandez, Odorizzi seemed to land awkwardly on his ankle during the delivery. After grounding the pitch first, he turned to base but collapsed after a few steps on the pitch.
Immediately after that, he lay down near the hill and slapped the grass with his hand. He was taken out of the game and had to be carted off the field.
The Astros said that Odorizzi had “discomfort in his lower leg” and was scheduled for an MRI scan. Manager Dusty Baker said he was in good spirits after the game.
“He’s probably doing better than it looked on the hill,” Baker said, per ESPN.
The 32-year-old had put together a strong season prior to the injury, coming into play with a nearly 16-inning shutout streak. His ERA currently stands at 3.13-31.2 innings.
In the end, the Red Sox won the game 6-3.
