Ashley Tisdale has responded to criticism after revealing she had stocked her shelves with books bought just before one Architecture Digest house inspection.
“These bookshelves, I have to be honest… actually didn’t have any books on them a few days ago,” she laughed in the video. “I had my husband walk into a bookstore and I was like, ‘You have to buy 400 books.'”
A tweet showing Tisdale’s admission in the video, captioned “I… am speechless,” has nearly 400,000 likes at the time of writing.
Tisdale responded to the tweet, writing, “Let’s get this straightened out. There are some of my books there from the past few years, but yes, 36 shelves of 22 books that I didn’t have and any interior designer would have done the same. They do it all the time, I was just being honest.”
The actor joked in a separate tweet, “Sorry I haven’t read all the tweets, I just have a bunch of new books to do lately.”
She also took the opportunity to promote her wellness platform Frenshe. “Seriously, here are some books I’d like to recommend. I love self-help books because I love talking about mental health — that’s why I started Frenshe,” she wrote.
The Frenshe article she links to begins with the line, “It’s hard to choose from 400 books, but our founder Ashley Tisdale wanted to share her absolute favorite books on her shelves.”
In the video, Tisdale said her husband initially pushed back on buying the books, saying they should “gather books over time and put them on the shelves,” to which she recalls responding, “No, no, no, no. Not if ADVERTISEMENT comes.”
People on social media were horrified by the revelation and questioned why she would volunteer that information on camera.
One person estimated that Tisdale could have spent $10,000 (£7,609) on the books if each had cost an average of $25 (£19).
