Ash Barty is playing GOLF tournament as a former tennis world No. 1 and is targeting THIRD pro sport a month after shock exit

ASH BARTY took a huge step towards a career in a THIRD professional sport after signing up for a golf tournament.

The multi-talented Australian, 25, shocked the tennis world after announcing her retirement Last month.

Barty was the world No. 1 in tennis, winning Wimbledon, the French Open and the Australian Open during her exceptional, albeit brief, career.

In 2014, the Australian took a break from tennis to boost his career CRICKET – Played for the Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash League in 2015-16.

Since hanging up her club, Barty has received advice for another new career, this time in golf.

Barty plays with a four handicap and even won a tournament in Queensland earlier this month.

Now the Aussie superstar will join the likes of Harry Kane, Pep Guardiola, Ernie Els and Fred Couples for an exhibition tournament in New Jersey, USA.

The competition runs between June 30th and July 1st – with two golf legends leading the teams.

The Icons Series is a 9-hole team match play tournament played at Liberty National Golf Club.

Els will captain a rest-of-the-world team, while Couples will lead a Team USA team including Olympic legend Michael Phelps and boxing icon Oscar De La Hoya.

Both teams will feature 14 sporting icons – with the full roster yet to be released.

But Rest of the World captain Els promised fans would see some “familiar faces”.

Els tells sports mail: “You (fans) will see some familiar faces in an unfamiliar role, so this is going to be interesting.

“But these guys are used to playing under pressure so I’m confident they will rise to the challenge and we will see good golf out there.

“The games will be hard fought but played in the right spirit.

“It’s going to be fun to be a part of and definitely fun to watch.”

But for many, all eyes will be on Barty, who has wowed fans and even some notable golfers, including Tiger Woods and Ian Poulter.

At an exhibition golf event in Melbourne in 2020, Woods revealed, “She’s got a great swing, are you kidding me?”

Poulter was equally impressed, according to Thomas Brookes, CEO of Icons Series.

Brookes told that Sydney Morning Herald: “Ian said, ‘Just hit some balls and we’ll see how you do.

“She hit that ball, I don’t know how far. And he turned around and said, ‘You’re trying to turn me on. Let’s just dig a little deeper.

“And she did a high fade. Then he said, ‘Can you low draw me?’ And she made a low draw.

“He said, ‘Oh my God, you’re something else.'”

Karrie Webb, World Golf Hall of Fame, captain of the Australian golf teams at the Paris 2024 Olympics, is another fan.

Webb said: “I don’t see Ash wanting to do a sport that requires her to travel the world.

“I think that’s part of what she didn’t like about tennis because she wasn’t in Australia.

“[But] I wouldn’t give her credit for becoming an Australian amateur champion one day.”
