Garth Crooks admits Nuno Tavares‘impressive performance against Newcastle has ensured that he is now in his sights.

The 21-year-old was a regular threat on the flanks in the 2-0 win over the Magpies and was also the assist for Bukayo Saka to open the scoring.

Tavares completed his move from Benfica in the summer and had to wait patiently for his chance under Mikel Arteta before the reliable performances of Kieran Tierney.

However, the Portuguese has been quietly getting on with his business since Tierney’s injury and Crooks are excited about what will come from the youngster.

Crook talks about Tavares after naming him on the list BBC team of the week.

‘I’ve always admired full-backs who weren’t afraid to try and have an impact on the game.

‘If Tavares is not running into the opponent’s half with the ball, he is trying to put one of his teammates in goal.

‘The assist for Bukayo Saka to score was pretty outstanding.’

Saka is the second Gunner to be named in the Crooks side with his Arsenal academy graduate helping the home side to a crucial three points and sending them fifth in the Premier League table.

Crooks said: “From the very start of the game, Saka looked like a player meant to be in business.

‘He gave Newcastle a little bit of a scare in the early game, but the Geordies survived.

‘However, it was only a matter of time before this brilliant young talent revealed the weakness of Newcastle on the right.

‘Saka scored a fantastic goal, matched by a great display of commitment and effort. I’m looking forward to seeing this guy take his next penalty, just to see how much he’s grown since the European Championship. ‘

Saka and Tavares will be hoping to keep Arsenal in good form when they face Manchester United on Thursday night.
