Everton centre-back Godfrey dodged the penalty even after VAR intervened but Gordon’s strike wasn’t even considered as Toffees win 2-1 in the last Premier League.

One fan posted: “Worth, bad game from everyone, us, Everton, Mike dean, var… but how Mary Godfrey’s sweet mother stayed on the pitch. and this Gordon tackle with Tavares wasn’t seen!?!?”

Manchester United legend Gary Neville claimed Godfrey ‘certainly’ had purposely stood in Tomiyasu’s face.

And copper Sky Sports expert Jamie Carragher thinks Godfrey is a ‘very lucky boy’ who doesn’t see red.

How much Arsenal fans also erupted in a SECOND incident – where Gordon made Tavares lower his shins.

It looked more like a clumsy footwork than brutal or reckless.

But some supporters on social media were furious that VAR Mike Dean didn’t review.

One fan said: “I’ve played football, coached it and watched it live all my life. If you’re late, tall and spiked it’s a red card. You don’t have to jump on two feet… “.

But other supporters point out that Gordon seems to be in contact only with his lead (right) boot.

One such comment was: “If you think Gordon got a red card you’ve never played ball in your life! He walks on ONE foot, to block the ball, not to jump into the ball (off the ground) & of it’s a foul, nothing else! Godfrey is different, 100% red card.”

And another fan countered: “The 50/50 challenge happens every game. Yes, late & yellow but football is a contact sport! He tackles and is a bit late. Its nothing more, nothing less. Its not a willful attempt to endanger the oppo, that’s why VAR doesn’t interfere.”

But if opinions are divided about Gordon, it seems that most commenters on Gordon’s ordeal believe he was lucky to have escaped being sent off.

Speaking to former British star Carragher, Neville said: “You’re talking to two of the masters about trying to make it look casual.

“We think he definitely meant it. However I can understand why VAR would say it was accidental, you can’t prove it… but as an expert, you know. ”

Everton themselves had two Richarlison goals ruled out for offside before their first Prem win since September 25.

That makes Arsenal receive the 3rd defeat in the past 4 matches.
