ARSENAL have reportedly launched a “charm offensive” to sign Benfica striker Darwin Nunez.
Nunez, 22, is said to have been on Arsenal’s radar in January when the club first made contact with the player’s agent.
The Gunners are intensifying their contact with Benfica and are reportedly beginning to talk about a move to north London vinyl record.
And Arsenal are reportedly several steps ahead of Newcastle and West Ham in the race to sign Nunez.
Both clubs were is said to be interested in the Uruguayan in January but were put off by its asking price.
At one point, Toon was willing to pay £50million for the forward but given the interest in Nunez only increases his asking price, which is believed to be on the high side now Range of £67m.
According to Fabrizio Romano, West Ham could make another bid for the Benfica star this summer, although Arsenal could have an advantage over the Hammers as they could be able to offer Nunez Champions League football.
Romano continued The Here We Go Podcast last week: “Arsenal also had some contacts with him [Nunez’s] agent in January. Let’s see what happens because West Ham wanted him too and West Ham too will go for a top striker in the summer.
“So summer will be the striker and Darwin Nunez could be one of the possibilities along with Jonathan David.
“Arsenal are there but they will take their time and hope to secure the sport of football in the Champions League, which is key to understanding what kind of striker they will sign.”
Nunez scored the winning goal against Ajax to send Benfica to the quarter-finals of the Champions League last week.
That was his fourth goal in eight games this season, which is likely to please him arsenal Bosses Edu and Mikel Arteta who have identified Nunez as Alexandre Lacazette’s replacement.
And then missed Dusan Vlahovic Coming into January, it comes as no surprise that the club are already taking steps to sign Nunez and there is no shortage of clubs snooping around the forward.
