Thames Valley Police said the suspect is in custody and the royals have been informed of the incident.

Superintendent Rebecca Mears said: “An investigation is underway following this incident and we are working with colleagues from the Metropolitan Police.

“This man was arrested on suspicion of breaching or trespassing a protected site and possession of an offensive weapon. He is still in custody at this time.

“We can confirm that security procedures were activated shortly after the man entered the property and that he did not enter any buildings.

“Members of the Royal Family have been informed of the incident.

“We do not believe there is a broader danger to the public.”

The Queen is spending Christmas with Charles and Camilla in Windsor – for the first time in 73 years without her beloved husband Prince Philip, who passed away in April at the age of 99.

The Queen, 95, missed the ceremony at St George’s Chapel but was joined for lunch by the royal couple and other members of the royal family.

It is understood that the Queen’s absence from the ceremony is a personal choice and follows a precautionary approach that has been seen over the past six months.
