Apple Watch 8 vs Watch SE 2 vs Watch Ultra: Which Should I Buy?

three new Apple Watches were launched today and it’s hard to tell how they fit together. The event emphasized each’s strengths but didn’t give us an honest overview of Apple Watch 8 vs SE 2 vs Ultra. Each of these devices is aimed at a specific demographic, and you can see which one you should buy below.

Should I buy an Apple Watch 8?

  • Price:
    • GPS: Starts at $399
    • GPS + Cellular: Starts at $499
  • Best Suited For: Most people

The Apple Watch 8 is the middle ground between SE and Ultra. It’s available in 41mm and 45mm variants and is great for those who want additional health sensors like blood O2 readings and temperature tracking, but don’t plan to use the Ultra’s extra activity tracking capabilities.

But just because the Watch 8 starts out cheap, don’t be fooled. Let’s say you want higher tier case materials and straps. In this case, you’ll pay almost as much as an Ultra (more if you buy one of the Hermes Editions).

Should I buy an Apple Watch Ultra?

  • GPS + Cellular: Starts at $799
  • Best Suited For: Athletes and travelers

If you spend most of your time on the move, the Apple Watch Ultra might be the best smartwatch for you. It has all the features and sensors of the Apple Watch 8 and more. The 49mm display is the largest and brightest on an Apple Watch yet, and it’s MIL-STD 810H certified, allowing it to be used as a dive computer. It also features dual-frequency GPS, which allows you to pinpoint your location more reliably.

As with the other models, it only gets expensive with the purchase of accessories and straps. Unlike the 8 or SE, however, there’s a single price tag for the Ultra, making it a no-fuss buy.

Should I buy an Apple Watch SE?

  • Price:
    • GPS: Starts at $249
    • GPS + Cellular: $299
  • Best for: Those who want an Apple Watch but don’t need the extra sensors.

The Apple Watch SE is the budget option of the line, but it can still do most of what the other two models can. It lacks the temperature, blood O2, and EKG sensors, but it can still track heart rate and other health options.

The SE is a great watch for kids or those who aren’t particularly keen on some of the more advanced capabilities of the more expensive models. Despite being cheaper, it still offers excellent build quality and is a great introduction to the world of smartwatches. Apple Watch 8 vs Watch SE 2 vs Watch Ultra: Which Should I Buy?
