Apex Legends next-gen update: PS5, Xbox Series X, FPS, resolutions, more

Apex Legends is getting its next-gen update in 2022, and Respawn has offered some hints as to what console players can expect. This is all we know about Xbox Series X upgrades | S and PlayStation 5 for Apex.

In November 2020, Sony and Microsoft released their new generation of console hardware on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X respectively | S. Since its release, fans have been yearning to get their hands on the new systems and put them to the test.

For many developers, the new console presents an opportunity to improve their game and unleash the impressive power of the next generation of hardware. Among the studios with big plans for next-gen innovations is none other than Respawn Entertainment, with their hit title, Apex Legends.

Outside of a few details, Apex Legends players with the latest consoles have had to simply wait and expect the upgrades to arrive for well over a year. Here’s everything that’s been revealed (so far) about the next-gen upgrades players can expect while playing on PS5 or XSX.

Apex Legends available on PS5 and Xbox Series X | S not?

Apex Legends is playable on the next-gen console, but there’s a catch: the game is only available through backwards compatibility. Players can enjoy performance boosts up to 1440p on the new hardware, but this isn’t a fully optimized version for next-gen consoles.

While the backwards compatible versions don’t offer a true next-gen experience, Respawn has confirmed a full upgrade for Apex Legends on both Xbox Series X | S and PlayStation 5 are in the works.

“120 FPS is one of our goals as we continue to look at it [next-gen] features and balance,” Ferreira asserts. The Respawn employee also explained that while he can’t promise anything specific, improving the game’s frame rate on new hardware is “high on the priority list”.

While Apex Legends already supports cross-play on next-gen hardware, cross-development has yet to be implemented.

Apex Legends’ Next Generation Cross-Development

Cross progression in Apex Legends has remained a highly requested feature since its launch. Although BR supports cross-play between PC, Xbox One and Series X | S, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Nintendo Switch, the game lacks any system for transitioning progress between platforms.

While Respawn has explained the difficulties of implementing such a system, fans continue to highlight the issue at every opportunity, especially during the community AMAs that Respawn holds on Reddit to start each new season.
