Anthony Rizzo Won’t Return to Chicago Cubs

It would be a really good story to see Anthony Rizzo return to Chicago Cubs. After what happened last summer, a lot of people will find real joy that a truly all-time great Cub is back. He’s the guy (apart from Rizzo, Javier Baez and Kris Bryant) that everyone thinks will stay.

That didn’t happen and he was evicted to the New York Yankees on trade deadline. He got there and then the Yankees lost the Wild Card Game a game to the Boston Red Sox. It could certainly be better for him.

Now, there are some rumors flying around that the Cubs will bring him back when the current (and extremely annoying) lockout is over. It’s just something that won’t happen right now.

Few people like the Chicago Cubs like David Kaplan of ESPN 1000 and NBC Sports Chicago. He made a video on Twitter (with a bit of commentary on the Chicago Bulls) confirming that there is no truth to that rumor. He notes that Rizzo is one of his favorites but he’s pretty confident in his beliefs.

The Chicago Cubs should absolutely not bring back Anthony Rizzo in 2022.

Honestly, that would be a very bad idea for the Cubs. He is a first-time senior who has faced some serious back trouble in recent years. When he’s on the field he can be super impactful but the Cubs don’t need him anymore.

They need to continue to add young players and build for the future in the small equipment they are going through. They’ll probably be a really average team in 2022 (their starting rotation is actually pretty good) but Rizzo certainly won’t push them too far.

Rizzo doesn’t want to come back either. They exchanged him. Go ahead. He needs a team that needs a great header and a backhand in the middle of their order. It would be nice if he brought his club in there while giving him a break in defence, and both leagues will have a DH by the time the first pitch is thrown this year.

Yes, it would have been nice to witness this reunion but it didn’t happen. That is at least right now. The Cubs would have been much smarter to completely switch to building for the future so they could go back to the knockouts and stay there. Bringing Rizzo back at this stage would go backwards.
